Curating an Exhibition “Pitching an Idea for an Exhibition”

In class we talked about ideas for the exhibition such as themes, the space we using for the exhibition, medium base, and if we want one artist or a multiple of artists.  Then how we are going to get the artists, we decided to have three artists for the three showcases.  As a group we went online to BRIC artist registry, selected two artists each and explain why the artists chosen should be in the exhibition. Then we are going to vote for the artist for the exhibition for one showcase.  For the other two other showcases we are going to get one from NutureArt registry and the other from open call.

The assignment is a response paper based on the two assigned videos and an article.

According, to the video and the reading curating is expanding.  In the video Teen Curator Anna curated an exhibition.  First she thought out the theme, went through the museum and the libraries to select pieces.  Then she made postcards and publicized the exhibition.  She also mentions the thought she had for what is going to be served for the opening.  Her best part she said of being the curator is setting-up the artwork to flow for people to relate to the art.

Hans Ulrich Obrist video, he curated 29 artists exhibition not in a gallery, but in the twenty-first- century way.  This exhibition is in the format of a printed magazine.  This was done with the artist’s voices and pictures.  Obrist did many visits and a lot of e-mail contacts.  He talked about a role of a curator is expanding and reaching beyond the walls of a museum or gallery.  He explained it has grown well beyond the selection and placement of art or artifacts in a space.  Curating became about empowering the audience, collaboration, and innovation, both in a physical space and in the virtual world.

In the reading “The Curators of New Brooklyn”, the article mentioned Establishments has changed nowadays, because in the old days Establishments used to be like a club of people working and communicating with one another.  The New Establishment is a network of people that does not know one another.  In the article represent the new Establishment in Brooklyn is made up of writers, artists, musicians, gallery owners, designers, restaurateurs, and a butcher.

What I learned from the videos and the reading, the future is going to need many curators because curating is going beyond the art world.

What I Learned About the Job of a Curator

Curating an Exhibition

This is my assignment response paper based on three assigned videos: http://www.mikes-world.org/videos/howtocuratevideo.html,

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=16gGn5i7FSchttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LmFCGClyPNo. On what I learned about the job of a curator, their duties, what goes into an exhibition and what is needed to do next.

What I have learned from the three videos about the job of a curator is that you have to be a good organizer and planner.  There are steps to follower so the best thing to do is make a checklist.  Start with a theme then look up artist’s work that fits the theme you looking for your exhibition.  Choose the artists and contact them.  Choose at least one to three artworks.  You have to know about variety of mediums because you have to choose the best quality of art pieces.  It’s better to choose the most unique art piece that people can remember for life and no matter how many times they look at the piece they can see something different each time.

A curator has to know how to display the art work such as the size of the space and is the piece of art work is the right size for the space.  Therefore, also keep in mind if there is light if it is going to work with the art piece or work against the piece.

Curators have to write an exhibition proposal and a press release that takes a lot of editing.  When you work as a group curator you have to work well with people because you have to work collaborative. When you work with a client you have to let the client see different variety of artwork with an open mind.  Also you have to ask a lot of questions of likes and dislikes to put together an exhibition and know how much money is in the budget to work with.  Therefore, a curator has to have some budget experience.

The last on the list is the opening which is the event with the artist’s friends, family, community and other artists to celebrate the artist’s work.  A curator job is a lot of work and you have to know artwork well to be able to put together an exhibition and make a statement of what art is really about. Now it’s time to make that list.
